• Pastor

    Jim Tate

My family and I are blessed to be a part of the Memphis family. My first Sunday as pastor here was March 1, 2009. I entered the ministry full-time after working as a banker for fourteen years. My wife, Judith, has been by my side throughout this journey. God has blessed her with a sensitive heart to the needs of others as well as the gift of teaching. My son, Trey, graduated from Rehobeth High School in 2015. He is a student attending Auburn University. My daughter, Emily, attends Rehobeth High School and is active in the youth group here at Memphis. I grew up in Luverne, Alabama. Judith and I both graduated from Auburn University in 1992. We were married in December of that year. We lived in Birmingham for the first several years of our marriage where she worked in public accounting and I worked at Compass Bank. God used my job with the bank to move our family to Dothan in 1998. A few years later, as His plan for us unfolded, we answered His call on my life to preach. We moved back to Birmingham, where I attended Beeson Divinity School. After graduating from Beeson in 2006, we moved to Brantley, Alabama, where I was pastoring the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. We were called to Memphis Baptist Church in 2009. My life verse is Colossians 3:17, which says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” My heart’s desire is to live this verse – to live a life of thanksgiving for all He has done for me. My prayer for our church family is that we worship, serve and live with this sense of thanksgiving to the One who offers salvation and an abundant life filled with the fruit of the Spirit.

  • Pastor Emeritus

    Ernest O'Neal

On May 24, 2009, Ernest O'Neal was named Pastor Emeritus of Memphis Baptist Church. A native of Mississippi, he retired from the pastorate at Memphis on March 23, 2008. Having served six churches in Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio over a period of 13 years, Ernest came to Memphis in August of 1977.

During his 30 year tenure, "Bro. O" as he was affectionately called by the congregation, led the church in unprecedented growth. With his heart for evangelism, Memphis grew spiritually and numerically. The church grew from a total church membership in 1977 of 481 to 1408 in 2008. He baptized 959 new Christians and received 867 new church members by letter or statement. He challenged our congregation to develop a deeper heart for missions. Through his leadership, our church's Cooperative Program offerings increased from 11 % in 1977 to 16.5 % in 2008. Over the years, he increased our involvement in hands on mission work. Bro. O led various mission groups from Memphis to Montana, Nigeria, Honduras, Nicaragua, Brazil, Venezuela, and Guatemala.

Under Bro. O's leadership, an expansion of church facilities was accomplished to meet the needs of our community. In addition to renovations in all of the original buildings, a new sanctuary was built in 1980 and in 1995 a multipurpose Family Life Center was erected. Through his foresight, additional land was purchased for future growth and expansion.

Memphis Church is proud to have him as our Pastor Emeritus and deeply appreciates his years of ministry.

Our daughter, Marsha and her husband August Roesener, live in Belleville, Illinois and they are active in church there. They are the parents of a son named Austin and a daughter named Mia Grace. I am a graduate of Samford University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I invite you to visit with us at Memphis and experience the joy we have in knowing Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

  • Associate Pastor of Discipleship

    Henry Johnson

What a very special privilege to be a part of Memphis Baptist Church and to serve on the church staff. I am looking forward to serving all of the members of this wonderful church. Memphis Baptist is one of most outstanding churches I know. I thank the Lord for the blessing of serving here as Associate Pastor of Discipleship. At the age of 19, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. He came into my life forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. As I grew in my knowledge of the Lord and His Word, God increased my desire to know Him better. Growing up a “farm boy,” I fully expected to spend my life on the farm. But God had other plans. He called me to preach and I accepted His call in 1956. After 56 years in ministry, God has brought me to Memphis Baptist Church. If there are any areas of discipleship in which you need direction, please share those with me and I will work toward getting a class in place.

  • Minister of Music

    Billy Rich

I have served churches in Florida and Alabama in the areas of Music, Education, Children/Preschool, and Administration. I have three grown children and seven grandchildren. My oldest daughter April and her husband Jeff Kirkland are actively serving at Logos Baptist Church here in Dothan. April is a Physical Therapist at Southeast Alabama Medical Center and Jeff is a lineman with Alabama Power. They have three children: Trevor (14), Tyson (13), and Evie (10). They also foster two precious children, Maryanna (3) and Donnie (1). My son Justin and his wife April live in Villa Ricca, Georgia where he owns three Physical Therapy Clinics and also serves as High School Student Pastor at First Baptist Villa Ricca. They have two children: Christian (14) and Sunny (13). They are passionate about serving God and witnessing for Him both in their business and church life. My youngest daughter Hannah and her husband Kirk Reid are also active members of Logos Baptist Church. Hannah is a nurse anesthetist with Dothan Surgery Center and Kirk is a sales manager for Amerigas. They have two young daughters: Sarah Claire (3), and Sadie Caroline (1). I am so thankful to be here serving you and our Lord. I have so many bible verses that are dear to me but one very special one is Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it."

  • Student Minister

    Jamie Holderfield

I am blessed to have served as Student Minister at Memphis Baptist Church since 2010. My wife's name is Cynthia and she works actively alongside me to serve our youth. We have two sons, Jared is 4, and Jacob is 3. Our student group is comprised of seventh through twelfth graders. I would love for your student(s) to be involved in our thriving student ministry. I strive to offer our students opportunities to grow and mature in their walk with the Lord. Our purpose is to fulfill Paul's words to Timothy in 1 Timothy 3:5, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity." Parent involvement is encouraged and appreciated. I am always here to serve your family. Please feel free to contact me at any time.

  • Kid's Minister

    Clay Greathouse

My name is Clay Greathouse and I am very blessed to be the Kid’s Minister at Memphis Baptist Church. I have grown up in Dothan, Alabama and have been part of the Memphis Family my entire life. I am married to my amazing wife, Carly. We love serving Christ together here at Memphis. As the Kid’s Minister, my heart is to encourage kids and their families to seek a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and grow in their relationship with Him. My life verse is Psalm 115:1, “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory because of Your love and faithfulness.” In this ministry, which God has entrusted to me, my goal is to make His glory known in everything that we do. If you are looking for a place to serve, I would love to for you to check out Crossover Kids Ministry.

  • Music and Kid's Ministry Assistant

    Lori Roney

Hi, I'm the Music and Kid’s Ministry Assistant. I am so happy you have joined us today and are interested in what God is doing through Memphis. God has blessed me with a wonderful family. My husband Tom and I married in September of 1988. We have two children in which have both graduated from RHS. Our son Evan is pursuing a degree in Business Finance/Accounting and our daughter Kathryn is pursuing a career to be a Veterinarian. We have been members at Memphis since April of 2005. I am sure you will find, as we did, a very friendly and loving church with many mentors that are ready to help and encourage you in your spiritual journey. I joined the Memphis Staff in January 2007 as the Kid's Ministry Director. It has been such a joy working with children, parents and teachers through our Kid's Ministry. In January 2015, we once again witnessed how God pulls all things together for the good. We welcomed to our staff, Bro Clay Greathouse as Kid's Minister whom I am excited to assist in the Kid's Ministry. I also have the great opportunity to assist Bro. Billy Rich in the Music Ministry. Both Ministries are very near and dear to my heart. I praise God for His perfect plan and I am extremely blessed to be used in this way. "You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

  • Ministry Assistant/Financial Secretary

    Vicki Turner

Hi, my name is Vicki Turner. I am the Ministry Assistant to the Pastor and the Financial Secretary. My family and I joined Memphis Baptist in March, 1995. We became very active in the church and really enjoyed the fellowship. I was hired as the Secretary in January, 2000. I love the administration aspect of my job, but even more so I enjoy the ministry aspect. I strive to meet the needs of the people at Memphis to the best of my ability, but in truth I am so blessed by a loving congregation and many friends! On a more personal note, I have been married to David Turner since August, 1979. We have two sons; Deven and his wife Chase, and they have five children, Tripp, Ella, Lizzie, Landon and Cooper; and Keith & his wife, Anna, who have two sons, Parker and Grady. Our social life is centered around our grandchildren’s activities. We are very blessed to have them live close to us. My father was called into the ministry and has pastored a church since I was seven years old. So growing up as a preacher’s daughter taught me a lot about ministering to people and letting one’s self be used by God. Therefore, I truly believe God led me to this position at Memphis Baptist Church, and I pray that I will honor Him in what He has called me to do. My favorite bible verse is: Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

  • Church Secretary

    Gayle Dean

Hello, my name is Gayle Dean and I am the Church Secretary. My husband Ronnie and I have been members since 2009. We have three children, Staci 31, Vance 31 and Brittany 28. We also have six grandchildren. I graduated from Dothan High School in 1983. One month later I started my first job at 17 with WexTex/Knothe in Dothan. Thirty years later the company was sold and moved to Miami, FL. In March 2013 I found myself searching for a job for the first time in thirty years. After a year of searching and definitely praying, God showed himself in a mighty way. I truly believe with all my heart that this is where God wanted me to be. I have always had faith that God would provide for me. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 I serve an awesome God!
